Audi concept car that looks like a super hero’s toycar

September 12, 2011
It’s ultra-light and it’s called the Spyder.Which is just as well because this nippy little city car looks like a just the kind of car Spiderman would get around in.German motor giant Audi has unveiled its bizarre new concept car today at the Frankfurt International Motor Show.

Rupert Stadler, chairman of car manufacturer Audi, presents the Audi urban concept car during the preview of the International Motor Show.

The racy battery-powered two-seater, which rolls on 21-inch wheels, is ideal for “extended city tours”, Audi claim. It has two electric engines – both fed by a lithium-ion battery – and a cockpit made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer.Audi says the car “does not fit under any of the conventional categories” and combines elements of “a racing car, a fun car and an urban car”.And it’s easy to see why. The sports car seats are low and slightly staggered and its doors open diagonally to the top.But the car is also the size of little city-goer capable of racing round narrow city streets.

The Spyder has two engines making it capable of impressive acceleration, Audi say.

A spokesman said: “The Audi urban concept is not based on any previous model – its development is solely oriented on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction.”The result is a concept car with no unnecessary weight, and one that concentrates on the pure essence of sporty motion.

“The Audi urban concept has a sleek body. The wheels are free-standing, their surrounding protective plates feature blinking strips of LED lights.”
